PTE Academic was designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in university-level English language instruction programmes. It was created in response to demand for a more accurate, objective, secure and relevant test of English. Students preparing for the PTE Academic test need to show genuine improvement in their English skills across the board, not just in their test-taking skills.
Launched in 2009, PTE Academic was rapidly adopted in the UK, Australia, the USA and Canada. It is accepted by thousands of academic programmes, including those at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, Yale and INSEAD. It is also accepted by the UK Home Office (UK V&I) for all visa applications and by the Australian Government (DIBP) for student visas.
